At the 2024 General Election though not a party member I assisted my local Labour candidate to be re- elected, helping with leafletting etc. Now, with these plans to place our economic burdens on disabled people, I feel I've been taken for a mug, I feel humiliated, like I might feel if I'd been scammed in a phishing attack. It has seriously undermined by willingness to assist Labour or even vote for them again, and caused me to question whether any of the existing political parties will be worth voting for.

Completely agree David. Having voted Labour all my life, (i'm 71),i now feel utterly betrayed by them. Such hopes for a better way of governing dashed within the first few weeks of their election and compounded since. I will NEVER vote for them again.

Same. I’m 72, and Lying Starmer and the right wing parliamentary Labour mps have pulled off a coup to steal the party from the members. They should all leave the party to show this government that their deception won’t wash. We need a new progressive party, and all the current members of the Labour Party should abandon Starmer’s perverse party and be the new party!

I’m a shade younger but for the early part of my voting years I believed that what the party stood for and who they represented was for me. As years rolled on I became more and more left wing while I still voted for Labour, there’s no way then or now I could support a right wing government, at least I can feel comfortable knowing they have the working man’s interests at heart. Sadly, I think they only have their interests at heart, nobody else can line their pockets like big business can.

Anyway Starmer started alarm bells ringing before he was elected, and lo and behold he dumped on people and denied things that were in the manifesto. No sooner did I realise this, I decided whilst Labour are a bunch of wannabe Tories and I can’t vote for this sinister and deceitful party again.

Has nobody heard of Transform, a political party consisting of many that were kicked out of the party, because they threatened Starmer’s leadership. I keep meaning to have a look at their website but something always happens.

'Inheriting' a massive mess from the Tories is going to take time to sort the black hole out!!!! Labour is still A LOT BETTER THAN ANY OTHER PARTY IN THE UK!!! Look at the bigger picture!!!

No. They are NO better than any other political party in the UK at this time. They all talk the talk to get the vote, and backtrack on all they said once they are in power. There are at least 10 soundbites of Starmer categorically stating there would be no council tax rises whatsoever this year - and what do we get 5%minimum rise, higher in some areas! Kicking pensioners in the face, screwing with DWP and PIP payments when they “could” introduce a wealth tax which 70% of millionaires are HAPPY to pay, but no. Why? Do they need to line their own pockets first? Sod the effing lot of them, they all deserve their heads on spikes across Westminster Bridge as a warning to all who want to follow on.

I think you should check your sources. Can't find anywhere in the GE debates/manifesto where Starmer promised to "freeze council tax", a power of councils.

The political system is not fit for purpose and has been shattered for years. The whole structure is twisted and perverted. MPs do not care about you the individual. They only care to rob you of every penny they can via taxation and do not represent your voice. These fake individuals are self serving and band together to make us wage slaves and flog us of every penny they can till we drop dead, where they then start again. They force us to work until our bodies are busted and torn while all the while they themselves retire years before on massive private pension and stolen wealth. They serve to feather their own personal wealth and lifestyle and that's it. They are all dirty and until we force the system to change it will always be this way...

This is why I cancelled my party membership over two years ago because Starmer was moving the Labour agenda to the right and so I could not vote Labour at the last election, therefore did not vote at all.

The hidden dilemma might be the shocking state of the national finances after 14 years of Tory mismanagement...

Which could account for the 'cuts' the nation might have endure over the next 4.5 years.

Democracy is more than the vote, which is simply a means of trying to ensure it. It is supposed to be government of the people, by the people, for the people. What we have instead is government of the people by the (special) people, for the (special) people. The rest of us just don't count.

This is not a Labour government.it is a disgrace. Instead of taking from the rich they’re taking from the poorest in society. I have voted Labour most of my life but this is NOT what I voted for. I have withdrawn my membership. The only party worth voting for in my opinion is the Lib Dems which I now support. Certainly not the Farage mob or the conservatives.

This is without a shadow of a doubt the most incompetent government in recent history. There is no competence whatsoever within the front bench ministers. Elected by less than 25% of the electorate yet holding an unprecedented number of seats in Westminster highlights that our electoral system is seriously flawed. First past the post elections are not fit for purpose when there are more than two parties on the ballot paper. Additionally we have a bunch of gutless MPs too scared of losing their jobs to vote against the government and actually stand up for the constituents who put them in power in the first place.A previous Labour government was brought down and lost power through a vote of no confidence. Well past the time to get shot of the current incumbents. In a matter of months Britain has been decimated. This must not be allowed to continue or democracy is dead.

I repeat, this is THE most incompetent Govt. In living memory. Not one single person on the current front bench is competent or capable of doing their job. Not one thing done to date has been positive for Britain in the last nine months.

Expand full comment
Chris Puttick's avatar

Really. No. The 4 o4 5 that preceded it were far worse. The UK is in a bad place entirely *because* of those previous governments and their collective failure to do the right thing for the country, their focus on populist memes and their entire absence of showing leadership. Is the current government the best ever? No. Are they the worst in living memory? Definitely not, but then those that immediately preceded them set a very low bar.

The trouble is, with me anyhow, is I don’t think our voting system in the UK is truly democratic. Everyone I know insists it is the best system, yet I think it’s largely undemocratic. We have an unelected upper chamber and an unelected head of state and the first past the post system is not fully democratic. We are now stuck with a government that the vast majority of the voting population didn’t vote for and don’t even like and we can’t do anything about anything they do. They are slowly undermining any democracy we do have and people I know don’t even seem to notice as they are all dutifully following the states TV channel the BBC.

We need a new system, as ours is out of touch with society (plus it isn't the 18th century anymore either). Everyone is corrupt, rich and perverse and mock the justice system. Tax the Rich 2% it's easy, and plus they won't even notice it.

As a life long Labour supporter and party member (I am 62) I will never vote for Labour again. I am a physically disabled autistic man who relies on PIP. I am disgusted by what Liz Kendal and other Labour MPs have said about the disabled in recent weeks. I never thought a Labour government would attack the weakest in society. Worse than the damn Tories!

I think voters have become completely disillusioned with the biggest parties. They are now increasingly turning to Greens who have had consistent and well liked policy over many years which they have implemented when able to when in power either in local councils or in the Scottish Parliament or to Reform which offers the snake oil of not having been in power and lots of victims to blame other than rich individuals and corporations which are responsible for the growing inequity and climate breakdown which is causing untold misery to millions. I know who I'd rather support and I hope others realise which option will give hope both now and in the future.

Democracy has never been about elections and votes. Nor the contents of manifestos. Democracy is about informed debate prior to reaching a decision; in a representative democracy that debate should be between the elected representatives.

The problem Labour has isn't about doing something that wasn't in their manifesto; it's retaining a commitment to something that was, regardless of the changes in circumstances that have occurred since that manifesto was written. Specifically they need to abandon the commitment to no increases in income tax and NI. Trump for all his faults has handed them the perfect excuse, one which AFAICT without detailed polling data, the majority of the general public would accept. Politically they would probably benefit (sic) from that, because any attack on that change can be deflected as support of the Trump/Musk/Putin axis.
