This year represents a fulcrum for global democracy. The story so far is not all bad - Modi does not have undisputed power in India, contrary to expectations; Le Pen has not been allowed to appoint the Prime Minister of France; AfD might be scarily large, but they haven't got a majority anywhere (which they would have had under a FPTP system). But what happens in the USA is crucial. Whether it turns out good or bad, we cannot afford to see the UK go the same way. Starmer has a uniquely strong postion from which to institute democratic reform - it would be madness to squander it.
