This year represents a fulcrum for global democracy. The story so far is not all bad - Modi does not have undisputed power in India, contrary to expectations; Le Pen has not been allowed to appoint the Prime Minister of France; AfD might be scarily large, but they haven't got a majority anywhere (which they would have had under a FPTP system). But what happens in the USA is crucial. Whether it turns out good or bad, we cannot afford to see the UK go the same way. Starmer has a uniquely strong postion from which to institute democratic reform - it would be madness to squander it.

I agree, Sandy. My worry is that Labour do not see the danger - or at least the full scale of it - and that their complacency may cause them to take action only when it is too late. They may not intend to squander the opportunity but they may end up doing precisely that. I am still hopeful that the British people will come together and create an irresistible public demand for the kind of change you allude to...and to have that change in place before the next election.
