I live in Bedford - yet I heard nothing about Truss' visit. Had I known I might have sent the venue a Deliveroo delivery of a dozen lettuces! Dreadful woman - I first thought that she might make a difference, and she did not disappoint, except that difference was not one that I had envisioned!
We need ,in this country & others a sharp educational focus on judging the character & personality of those who vie for high office . As a retired University lecturer I used to when elections were imminent encourage my students to use their vote thoughtfully . I frequently heard the defeatist response- “ Oh they are all the same” which I would then refute. The common link with the present day problematic politicians in my opinion is a personality which is self serving, ignores both facts , & the basic parental instruction to their children- “do not lie”. Maybe we need not just a health & cognition test for leaders but a moral compass test as well!
I find this a fascinating space, Richard. And I applaud your attempts to persuade the next generation to engage with democracy and actually USE their democratic rights. The development of critical thinking skills must be a greater priority in future, I think.
Definitely, the present UK Govt. Is attempting to give critical thinking a higher profile in the curriculum apparantly but I haven’t seen much detail as yet.
Thanks for an excellent piece of political satire that really bites into the iceberg that was Truss-onomics. If she was a blot on the political landscape between Johnson and Sunak then this is going to be a less than spectacular failure from the get-go. What we really need in the UK today is a government prepared to offer change rather than robbing those without to give ever more to this with too much. The black hole left by Austerity 1.0 could be filled (and then some) by a tax of 3% on wealth over £10m. Let's not pretend that this money (wealth) is sloshing around in the economy because it isn't. The wealthy 1% keep their money offshore and the more they have the less is available to those in need.
It is the blatant bias of the British news media who will enthusiastically treat her thingumajig as reliable source. It will support false claims of debate and argument which supported by a phalanx of Nowhere Men, sitting in their Nowhere Land, and dreaming of a yesterday that never existed.
Not much to add to A I Willy and B Human great assessment. A truly loathsome, ignorant and opportunistic er 'politician'..not one principled conviction of how a society could be shaped...Trusses whole career is ridiculuous, contradictory and damaging her latest gaff.. on one hand she supports trump, a would be medieval monarch while wishing to jettison the UK's constitutional monarchy! But our constitution does need more clarity..a unelected PM who lasts forty odd days and crashes the economic well being of the country should 1 - be banned from ever holding any future public office and 2 - has no financial entitlements or profiting following her resignation... ie the £120k pension or the lecture rounds...this should be given to the poorest member of our society
So far as I see it, a fundamental flaw in the concept of Democracy is that it was applicable in the original conditions of a small population with fairly rigid social strata: Patricians, plebs and slaves. Yes, I know this is a mixed metaphor and if that's an issue for you, you are part of the problem.
Under the fluid social structures of today, democracy cannot work: whoever has the bigger axe to grind and the loudest mouth to shout and the most plausible lies to tell will lead the masses by their noses...dangling tempting bait to conceal their barbed hooks.
We do not live in a Democracy, dear people, "Plutocracy" is the word and our so-called Democracy is a sham; snare and delusion. Greed rules.
Bread and circuses will not placate the stirring mob for ever.
And this will continue until we are all driven to our knees in Prayer and Repentance; and learn to love our neighbours or destroy humankind altogether.

Thanks Mark- great clarity as always on what it really means to be cancelled- and Truss, much to our disbelief, certainly is not.
shes just an angry person whos parents ;father professor at a uni, were fierce Labour members and as a kid she went on protest things
It is not Lis Truss who worries me.

The far right narrative has to be re-written, because it's a mishmash of failure lies and stupidity.

She's completely lost in showbiz.
